October 28th: The Day a “No” Became a Symbol of Freedom

Some words transcend time. Words that, even decades later, remind us of the meaning of courage, unity and dignity.
October 28th is more than just a date on the calendar. It is a day of remembrance, honor and national pride, dedicated to those who stood bravely in the face of adversity, defending their freedom and their values.
The historic “No” of 1940 is not simply a moment in history. It remains a timeless symbol of resistance, strength of spirit and faith in what truly matters.
The Story Behind the Historic “Ohi”
But who said “No,” and to whom?
In the early hours of October 28, 1940, at approximately 3 a.m., Italian Ambassador Emanuele Grazzi arrived at the residence of Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas in Kifissia, Athens. He delivered an ultimatum on behalf of Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator, demanding that Greece allow Italian troops to enter and occupy strategic locations across the country.
Metaxas rejected the ultimatum. His reported response in French was “Alors, c’est la guerre” — “Then, it is war.” Although the famous word “Ohi” (meaning “No” in Greek) was not necessarily spoken exactly as the legend suggests, it became the powerful expression of Greece’s refusal.
Just hours later, at 5:30 a.m., Italian forces crossed the Greek-Albanian border, marking the beginning of the Greco-Italian War.
What followed was not simply a military confrontation. It became a defining chapter of Greek history, remembered for the courage, resilience and determination of the Greek people.
The anniversary we celebrate today honors not only a political decision, but also the collective spirit of a nation that stood up for its freedom.
A Day That Brings Us Together
Every year, this anniversary invites us to remember our history, honor those who fought and reflect on the importance of peace, solidarity and freedom.
In Thessaloniki, a city with a rich history and a distinctive cultural identity, October 28th holds a special place. The commemorations, the flags and the shared moments of reflection bring the spirit of this day to life.
Keeping the Memory Alive
At Capsis Hotel, we honor October 28th with respect for our history and the values that unite us.
Because some anniversaries do more than invite us to remember the past. They inspire us to build a future filled with greater humanity, respect and hope.
Happy October 28th. Happy Ohi Day.
