Vibrant, historic, and full of life, Thessaloniki is one of Greece’s most fascinating cities. With its seaside promenade, rich cultural heritage, and incredible food scene, the city offers the perfect destination for a short getaway. In just 48 hours, you can experience its history, flavors, and energetic atmosphere.

Day 1: Discover the Historic Heart

Morning: The Icons of Thessaloniki

Start your day at the city’s most famous landmark, the White Tower of Thessaloniki, which stands proudly along the waterfront. Once part of the city’s fortifications, today it houses a museum and offers panoramic views over the Thermaic Gulf.

From there, enjoy a relaxing walk along the Thessaloniki Waterfront, one of the most beautiful seaside promenades in Greece. The path stretches for several kilometers and is perfect for walking, cycling, or simply enjoying the sea breeze.

Continue towards Aristotelous Square, the central square of the city. Designed in the early 20th century, it is surrounded by elegant buildings and cafés, making it the ideal spot to experience the rhythm of the city.

Afternoon: Roman and Byzantine Heritage

After lunch, head to the historic monuments that reveal Thessaloniki’s rich past.

Stop at the Arch of Galerius, one of the most famous meeting points in the city. Built in the 4th century AD, it once formed part of a monumental complex celebrating the victories of the Roman emperor Galerius.

Just a few steps away you will find the impressive Rotunda of Thessaloniki, a massive circular structure that has served as a Roman mausoleum, a Byzantine church, and later an Ottoman mosque. Its mosaics are among the oldest in the Christian world.

If you enjoy museums, visit the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, which showcases treasures from ancient Macedonia.

Evening: Food and Nightlife

No visit to Thessaloniki is complete without exploring its food scene. The historic district of Ladadika District is the perfect place for dinner.

Once a commercial quarter filled with olive oil warehouses, today Ladadika is packed with traditional tavernas, restaurants, and vibrant bars. Try local specialties like gyro, souvlaki, and the famous pastry bougatsa.

After dinner, enjoy a drink at one of the many cocktail bars nearby and experience Thessaloniki’s lively nightlife.

Day 2: Culture, Views, and Local Life

Morning: Upper Town and Panoramic Views

Start your second day by exploring Ano Poli, the only part of the city that survived the great fire of 1917. With its traditional houses, narrow streets, and quiet atmosphere, it offers a completely different side of Thessaloniki.

Walk along the historic Heptapyrgion Fortress, part of the city’s Byzantine walls, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the entire city and the sea.

Afternoon: Cafés and Local Lifestyle

Return to the city center and enjoy a relaxed lunch or coffee near Aristotelous Square. Thessaloniki is famous for its café culture, and locals love spending hours chatting over coffee.

You can also explore the vibrant student area near Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, one of the largest universities in the Balkans. The youthful energy of the city is especially visible here.

Evening: Sunset by the Sea

End your weekend with a sunset walk along the Thessaloniki Waterfront. The view of the sun setting over the Thermaic Gulf creates one of the most beautiful moments in the city.

For a final dinner, choose a seaside restaurant and enjoy the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere that makes Thessaloniki unforgettable.
